New page

So I've been thinking about the technology level I want to have for Kamirell. In particular I was thinking about weapons, but that lead me to thinking about other technologies. I'm also trying to consider what disparity there might be in terms of technology between different places. I still think I want the majority of the world to be fairly medieval in terms of technology, but I've already discussed wanting to have Palidae and Eldracor to have more advanced technology than that. In particular something in the vein of a light gearpunk aesthetic.

I don't want there to be technology so advanced that it's jarring, or that it doesn't make sense that it wouldn't have spread globally as fast as possible. However clockwork devices will likely be something that are not uncommon in Palidae or Eldracor. However without mass production, these will be built by artisans and likely very expensive, making them decently uncommon outside of these two nations, but possibly moreso amongst royalty or other wealthy individuals. Having this kind of tech would definitely be a status symbol most places. Besides clockwork devices, I think some form of oil lamps would be present in those same locations. However magic may actually be better in many cases.

As for weapons, I think I want to have basic firearms. I want there to be cannons for sure, and very basic pistols. I'm still debating whether or not I want there to be any sort of rifle. I do, however want there to be versions of these guns and possibly the cannons too, which use some sort of magical firing mechanism. Right now, the name I've come up with is “percussive stone”, which could maybe amplify the force of anything that strikes it hard. So, if you have the hammer of a gun strike it, then that force is amplified and transferred to the ammunition on the other side of it. Maybe the stone is damaged or even just turns to dust or something after it's done it's thing? Would introduce an interesting problem for mining it. But having it remain would also give it a significant advantage over gunpowder driven firearms.

I also need to develop the magic system more before delving too deep into these technologies, as the two would surely impact each other's use and development.
